Wonderful June Retreat

June 22nd, 2016

Here’s hoping that you had a wonderful weekend! We had lots to celebrate—Father’s Day, our anniversary and my birthday. When Bill and I announced our engagement and told my mother that we were considering June 19 she commented, “Whatever date you is fine with me but if you choose June 19th you will probably never receive an anniversary gift and a birthday gift on June 20. Hearing that comment Bill has never failed to give me both an anniversary and birthday gift.

It’s fun being born on the longest day of the year. A couple of days before my birthday Bill asked me what I would like for my birthday. I’ve always avoided giving him suggestions because he has such good ideas on his own. This year I did make a suggestion. I told him I would like him to clean the oven! Yes, really! He does such a good job at it! The oven racks are gleaming after Bill cleans them!

I’ve been trying to clear some things out--- like greeting cards I’ve been saving for years. I savored all the cards from my 60th birthday. That was a big year! After taking a good look at them I was very bold and saved only 6 of them. Amongst the 60th birthday cards I found a 40th anniversary card from my cousin, Nancy. The cover is simple: The word LOVE in lovely script and a Bible verse from James I:17.  “Every GOOD  gift and every PERFECT gift is from above.
These are the words inside:
“The gifts of love, friendship, and marriage
Are among God’s best in life,
And the celebration of all that He’s given to you
Makes this a special day.
Enjoy the blessing of each other—
May He continue to be the center of many happy years of love!

When we moved to our place there were 4 lilac bushes, 3 peonies, and an Oriental Poppy bed. The poppies have reseeded in lots of places. I love them! They were favorites of my Grandmother.

Nancy continued on with her neatly written note.
Dear Bill and Jane,
I’m thinking of the happy day in Ames in 1965 when I witnessed your lovely wedding, and I’m not quite believing that it can be 40 years ago. For one thing, where did those years go? And for another thing……it’s old people who have 40th anniversaries! That rule must have changed!
I’m also remembering that it was the year of your 25th that the two of you and Dean & Pam (my brother and sister-in-law) came to see us in Iowa Falls. Although 25 years of marriage is significant, now it seems to me like it is just a good start!
I may have told you this little story about Henry and Lena Johnson, our neighbors on the farm. (They had been married over 80 years when Lena died a year ago.)
When I visited them at the time of their 60th wedding anniversary, Lena showed me what they had bought each other as a present—a new set of china! I loved that! I marveled at what that said about their live-for –the –day outlook. They, of course, didn’t know they would be blessed with another 20 years of marriage, but they certainly planned to live each day. And to use those dishes!
Blessings on your 40th anniversary! You have a very good start! May you always seize the day, and …..go buy new china!
I’m so glad that I found this card that I saved 11 years ago. Bill and I won’t be buying any new china. I will try to use the lovely Lenox china we received as wedding gifts more often!

The Nine Quarter Circle Ranch Retreat last week was very special. It was a small and intimate gathering. I personally knew all the participants but none knew each other. The memory of the women sharing and caring for each other is remarkable. The star quilts are gorgeous. I was so pleased since they were from kits handpicked by QIC staff last fall.

Here I am outside my wonderful cabin!

One of the choices from the kits I mentioned.
